I know this is several months after his passing, but I just heard today. So sad we missed the memorial. Coach Bill saw my son swimming a couple years ago and asked to train him. My son Michael felt so special to be picked out and chosen by Bill. We loved him dearly. He shaped the direction of my son's teen years and gave him a great love for swimming. We spent many hours with Bill and went through some rough waters with him a few years ago. He spoke often of his kids and grand kids and had many special words about a beloved grand daughter in Florida. My husband is a pastor, and Bill attended our church. He loved The Lord! We will always be grateful to have known him.

Recently heard of your father's passing. "Uncle Bill" meant so much to our family. He was a gifted swim coach. He taught my son to swim with such grace and beauty. Uncle Bill spent many hours training him. A few years ago my son was a lifeguard in Seattle and attributed his success as a swim coach to Uncle Bill. The world is a little sadder without him. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all.

To the family of William Haena: I saw Mr. Haena's obituary in the West Hawaii Today newspaper and wanted to send you our family's condolences. Your father was a gentle and kind man who taught our two daughters and one of their friends to swim during the summer of 2000 at the Kona Pool through the Red Cross.
