Ken Elflein lit a candle in memory of Perry Miles
I met Perry Allen when we were both around 13 years old and while he was my nephew, he was 6 months older than I was. He helped his grandpa commercially fish that Summer and we were friends. He talked of living on an island back then and he did it. He chose a wonderful wife, Mary who took great care of him.
Perry met my dear friend Mary when they were in the Army. From the beginning, their souls had found each other and, together, they created a life most people only dream of.
Their heavenly Hawaiian dream lasted over 35 years as they built their Paradise in Kapoho and lived in peace with nature and friends and dogs and cats and all of the greatest gifts of their sacred island. Perry could transform his imaginings into realities.
I will always love him as my friend, but moreso as the handsome war hero who captured Mary's heart and, with her, built a tropical homestead, far from the madding crowd.
My sadness is tempered with gratitude and admiration for a man who gave so very much, but lived on his own terms.
