Beryl Joan “BJ” Spalding Beryl Joan “BJ” Spalding, 82, of Captain Cook died Nov. 24 in Kona. Born Oct. 28, 1943, in Innisfail, Queensland, Australia, she was formerly Beryl Joan Braithwaite. In her youth she lived in Cairns, worked at an outback station, and was active in the Choral Society and the Innisfail Pipe Band, where she was known for her bagpipe playing. She later moved to the United States, spending most of her life in California before settling in Hawaii. In 2005 she married Robert Samuel Foerster Jr., and together they enjoyed running a coffee farm in Captain Cook. She was also active with the Order of the Eastern Star in California and at Christ Church Episcopal Kona. . Survived by daughter, Sarah (Matthew) Hoy‑Spalding of Australia; brothers, John (Judy) Braithwaite of Taylors Beach and Darryl (Marilyn) Braithwaite of Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast; sister, Rhonda (surname Bathe) of Cairns; stepchildren, Jim (Celia) Foerster of Colorado and Sue (Jeff) Heng of California; grandchildren, Robert and Jonathon. Preceded in death by husband, Robert Samuel Foerster Jr., who passed away nine days earlier; brother, Ellis Braithwaite.
