Betsy Elaine HoSoon Hinau's Obituary
Betsy Elaine HoSoon Jhun Hinau passed away on March 4, 2026 in Hilo. She was born on 11/28/32 in Palolo 'Oahu to Mary Santiago of Kula, Maui & Bong Kee Jhun of Seoul, S. Korea. The 20th of
21 children, she was a feisty lady. Full of spunk & opinions. But, also full of love for her 'ohana & faith in our Lord. Betsy moved to Lahaina, Maui in her teen years & attended Lahainaluna High School where she was a member of the NHS, cheer squad, & a
Latin whiz. It was in Lahaina that she met & married our handsome dad, Sheridan Kekinomakani Hinau. She was an active member of the Maria Lanakila Church choir & Sacred Hearts Society. A well known West side entertainer, Betsy was with the Ka'anapali Trio
at the KBH. She was also hostess for the awesome Sheraton Maui luau & traveled extensively for the Maui Visitors Bureau. Most often to other states, Canada, & Japan. One of the founding members of the Na Mele O' Maui scholarship & Keiki song contest, she
especially enjoyed being MC for the Hyatt's Aunty Emma Farden Sharpe's hula festival. Betsy served as a Maui Police Department commissioner. She will long be remembered as Kupuna Hinau for the DOE at Kihei Elementary & Lokelani Intermediate. She received
various accolades for perpetuating Hawaiian culture. The most recent being one for 'Olelo Hawai'i from the OHA in February. She was most importantly our mom, "gram" & "gigi." Betsy was predeceased by our dad, 20 siblings, numerous nieces & nephews, & close
friends. She is survived by her daughter Sheri-An Kaleinani (Robert "Butch") Tam Ho, son Neal Kealohamakua Hinau, Granchildren: Mikala Hinau Nanod ( David Jr.), Alaina Hinau (Jacob), Jaime Hinau Kobatake (Kaleo), Xan DeCambra (Dennis), Ryssa Tam Ho (Mika),
Scott Hinau, Liko Ardino & Sara Dobashi (David). Great Grandchildren : Jordan, Josh, Jahliyah, Kalo, Kanaloa, Hi'iaka, Jaede, Joe-Mitchell, Elyana, Xayden, Denna, La'ahiwa, Kuihewa, Bella, & Valerie. As well as literally hundreds of nieces & nephews. Mahalo
from our pu'uwai to our Duenas/ Jhun & Hinau 'ohana who stood by us all the way. Close friends who are family. Legacy Hilo for the love & care mom received there. Thank you Jenna, Andy, & Sharon. REST IN LOVE MOM!!! A HU'I HOU!!!
