Daniel Vasquez Sr.'s Obituary
Daniel Vasquez Sr., lovingly known as “Danny,” was born on July 3, 1949, in Kealakekua, Hawaiʻi, to Catalina Alvarez and Phillip Vasquez. He passed away on April 22, 2026, at one of his favorite surf spots in Keauhou, Hawaiʻi, at the age of 76.
Danny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alfrieda “Freda” Valeros, whom he married on July 9, 1969, in Kalihi, Hawaiʻi.
He is survived by his partner in crime, devoted companion, and beloved surf diva of the past 30 years, Elena Garcia of Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi; his children, Daniel Vasquez Jr. of Kahului, Maui, Rebecca M. Canevali (Donn) of Tennessee, and Ezra M. Vasquez of Kansas; and his cherished grandchildren, Kamanaʻolana M. Vasquez-Grey (Travis) of Washington, Keakamahana M. Canevali of California, Hiʻilani N. Canevali of Tennessee, Maliʻu L. Canevali, and great-grandchild Kaileʻa Nurial Dacalio-Grey. He is also survived by numerous siblings, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, extended ʻohana, and lifelong friends.
Danny proudly served in the United States Army and was stationed in places including Germany and New Mexico, where he was trained to drive diesel supply trucks. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned home to Hawaiʻi, where he continued truck driving for a time while also pursuing his lifelong passion for music. Over the years, he shared the stage with beloved Hawaiian musicians, including Aunty Diana Aki, Uncle George Naope, and many other talented artists throughout the islands.
His love for music was rivaled only by his deep connection to the ocean. Danny was a skilled waterman in every sense of the word — from ʻaʻama crabbing and ʻōpihi picking to fishing, diving, and, of course, surfing. The ocean was where he felt most at peace, and for those fortunate enough to know him, his aloha spirit and love for the ocean were unforgettable. Being raised in the ocean by my father will forever remain one of my most treasured memories.
Our family extends a heartfelt mahalo to everyone who knew and loved him throughout his life. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
