Edward Takeshi Hayashi's Obituary
Edward Takeshi Hayashi of Hilo passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025 at the age of 93.
Born and raised on Maui, Edward later moved to the Big Island, where he dedicated his life to education. He began his career as a teacher and went on to serve as an elementary and middle school principal. Known for his steady leadership, fairness, and genuine care for students and staff, he made a lasting impact on the many big island schools and communities he served: Honomu, Mountain View, Volcano, Keaau, Kapiolani, and E.B. DeSilva to name a few.
Edward is survived by Jane his loving wife of many years, three children Jill, Ty, and Garret, and five grandchildren, all of whom were the greatest source of his pride and joy. Also surviving Ed are sisters Janet and Lucille and brother George.
Outside of his career, Ed embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved to travel (Europe, Japan, Korea, China, New Zealand, Canada, Alaska) and especially enjoyed trips to the ninth island Las Vegas. A lifelong sports fan, he never missed cheering on his favorite teams, UH Rainbow Warriors, the Atlanta Braves and the San Francisco 49ers. He also enjoyed many years on the Hilo Municipal golf course with several golf clubs and was well known for appreciating the camaraderie of the “19th hole” at the end of a round.
Edward will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, and friend whose legacy of patience, dedication, kindness, and gentle nature will live on through all who knew him.
A Memorial Services will be held on Feb 21, 2026 at Homelani Memorial Park in the chapel from 11am-1pm.
