Marlu West's Obituary
In memory of our beloved Marlu West (Tutu). Our big hearted, loving, adventurous, and brave mother and grandmother.
Tutu will be missed. She was an adventurous soul at heart- always spending time at the beach, surfing, boogieboarding, going for hikes and other fun activities. She had a big heart- always sending packages on special occasions, calling to catch up and opening her house to family and friends. She was as tough as nails- since she was younger, she was forced to sink or swim and she always swam.
Marlu West, more commonly known as Tutu, lived 76 rich years. From a young age she learned to toughen up. From attending boarding school, to battling polio. She learned to overcome adversity and always adapted. This built her into the strong independent woman we remember her as. Despite her battles, she made sure to live a rich life full of adventure. From catching boa constrictors in the Amazon to going swimming in the ocean every day with the dogs. Tutu will remain in our hearts as a symbol of bravery and adventure, but especially of love. She never failed to send a meaningful package on special occasions and always wished the best for her family. Tutu will be remembered as an amazing mother and grandmother. We will be forever grateful for the ohana she brought together.
She founded Save The Sea Turtles International in 1991, a non-profit to help sea turtle and ocean conservation in Hawaii. She answered the phone for entangled or hurt turtles even in retirement. She was also extremely proud of the beach clean ups she organized for decades every weekend through the non-profit - she inspired a lot of people with theses clean ups. Save The Sea Turtles International is still operating thanks to her ongoing efforts.
Tutu will remain in our hearts as a symbol of bravery and adventure, but especially of love. She never failed to send a meaningful package on special occasions and always wished the best for her family. Tutu will be remembered as an amazing mother and grandmother. We will be forever grateful for the ohana she brought together.
She is survived by her sons, Ty Abusaid, JC Abusaid, and Juan Oliphant. Her grandkids: Michelle Abusaid, Melisa Abusaid, Nicholas Abusaid, and Isabella Abusaid
