Robert Amar "Bear" Barrilleaux's Obituary
Robert Amar “Bear” Barrilleaux of Hilo died peacefully on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at Hilo Medical Center surrounded by friends and family. He was 84.
Bear was born in Franklin, Louisiana and lived in many places in his life. Texas, New Mexico and finally Hawaii which he called home for nearly forty years. A master Volkswagen mechanic for more than sixty years. He had successful businesses in Texas, New Mexico and again when he hung his shingle in Hilo. He was an avid and fierce drag racer, campaigning several cars and winning many tittles and trophies in the NHRA Modified Eliminator class including the Division 4 Championships and the Mile High Nationals. Bear enjoyed good food, good company, and was a loyal friend, mentor and confidant to many.
Bear is preceded in death by his father, Kermit Joseph Barrilleaux; mother, Virginia Mary Barrilleaux; and sister, Judy Waller. He is survived by his wife, Jesusa Barrilleaux; sister, Janet Barrilleaux Davis; sons, Blake (Tracy)Barrilleaux and Noel (Coral) Barrilleaux; daughter, Tressa (Ginger) Cherry; hanai daughters, Kapua (Kawika) Abreu and Riza Mae Rabanzo; hanai son, Christian Rabanzo, who was also his right hand man and caretaker in his last years; granddaughters, Jade Barrilleaux and Kayla Harlow; grandsons Gage and Canyon Barrilleaux.
A celebration of life will be at Aunty Sally's Luau House (799 Prilani Street, Hilo, Hawaii 96720) on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at 11:00 A.M.
