Samantha Patricia Sherline's Obituary
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Samantha Patricia
Sherline of Na’alehu, Hawaii on October 17, 2025. Samantha was born
in Los Angeles, California on May 27, 1938 to Durwood Preston and
Edythe Faye Perryman. She had one younger brother, David Phillip
Perryman, of Sierra Vista, Arizona.
Samantha was preceded in death by her husband, Michael David
Sherline. She was a mother of two sons, Thomas Patrick Long, who
preceded her in death in 2013 and is survived by her son, James Donald
Long, of Na’alehu, Hawaii.
As a young girl, Samantha lived in Brooklyn, New York, Maryland, and
O’ahu where she recalled fond memories of leaving school and going to
the beach when the surf was up, eating fresh sugar cane, and dancing
hula.
After leaving Hawaii, she enjoyed dancing in local dance troupes in
California and Arizona. Samantha had a vivacious personality, beauty
and style, and could light up any room.
Samantha was a woman of many gifts and talents; a wife, mother,
homemaker, and worked in several capacities from secretary, police
dispatcher to plant hospital owner/operator.
Throughout her life, she showed her love and kindness by serving others.
She loved people, animals, plants, and flowers of all kinds. While in
California, she owned and operated plant hospitals. Patrons from all over
Southern California seeking help for their sick plants brought in their
plants for assessment and treatment. Her son fondly recalls, she had
specific cabinets set up for Admittance, Isolation, Intensive Care, and
Recovery. She would work, in her tender-loving way, to bring plants back
to life so patrons could receive a healthy, flourishing plant along with a
prescription and instructions for maintaining plant health.
She was creative, industrious, innovative, and artistic. She could envision
something in her mind and create it with her own hands. At a young age,
she loved to sew and became a master seamstress. She was also an
avid bear collector and described herself in her own words as
“enthusiastically dedicated”, collecting bears of all types. She is terribly
missed by her precious dog, U’i, and her cat, Little Girl (aka Pua
Makamae). She loved and cherished ALL her fur babies.
Samantha was a faithful and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints. She often expressed her love for her faith through
testimony and was always willing to be the first to bear her testimony
during each fast and testimony meeting at her local ward chapel in
Na’alehu, Hawaii. She was always willing to share her love for the Savior
and His Gospel to anyone and everyone she met.
