Susan cared for our beloved pets for the two years we lived on the Big Island. She was without exception a loving and kind professional, a true animal lover.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Susan's passing. She was a force larger than life and truly wore a coat of MANY colors. Never one to toot her own horn, after being our "dog lady" for nearly 10 years, I learned, through our mutual doctor, that she had been a DA in California years before! When I next saw her I asked her about it and she casually said, "Oh that! Yes, after being arrested four times for contempt of court, I quit and opened a dress shop in Laguna Beach!"
Susan lovingly cared for my first two westies, Kirby and Scruffy, actually having a sweet sign made after Scruf's passing and placing it on the kennel he usually stayed in. She called him "Scruf-man." Shortly after we inherited our golden, Shanti, followed a year later by 2 westie pups, Dinky and Chubby McDuff. She treated each of them like her favorite. They spent several weeks at a time at Hilo Holiday Pet Hotel and loved every minute. They had a special canvas bag, Susan made them a personalized name tag for, with their food and treats. When I would take that bag out and begin packing, there was no peace in the house until Susan drove up the drive and they danced around waiting to jump in their kennels. At first I was mesmerized that this kind lady would pick up and deliver my dogs! I'd be waving goodbye and they never looked back, all I'd see was a bunch of wagging tails in the kennels. Many times she would call with an update of what they we doing. I remember, like it was yesterday, there was a big storm in Hilo. I called to see if they were alright. Susan answered and said she brought "the kids" up to the house and my dogs were watching TV with Richard, along with a few others-and that she had a duck downstairs in a wading pool! After a while I got to know Susan and realized she was dressed in casual, but fabulous clothes-Patagonia jackets and always a Prada bag! She truly loved what she did with the animals and I always told people about the property with her horses and each of the dog kennels that were individually themed.
Susan fondly spoke of her family-a lot. She told of Richard's contracting work and how she adored her grandchildren, all in California. I had the good fortune of meeting Kary when he was in Kurtistown and Susan arranged to have him come up to my house to repair a cracked wall. She was absolutely right, no one in Hawaii could come close to his expertise. I never got to meet Kimberlee, but Susan spoke of her lovely home, riding horses and great car - loving life in California!

Our condolences on Susan's passing...she will be truly missed. Susan always made us feel so comfortable when our little Ali was in her care. She and the staff of Hilo Holiday Pet Hotel really made Ali's stay a real vacation. Her "pet" name for Ali always brought a smile to our faces..."Ali bear".
Know that Susan is in our thoughts and hearts. Our prayers and hearts go out to the Pierce family and the Hilo Holiday Pet Hotel Ohana.
with deepest sympathy...Miles, Kym & Ali Tagawa
Dear Richard and Family and Staff..With sorrow and heavy hearts we bid Susan farewell. She was so good to our Chocolate labs with her love and giving them a great place to vacation..She was truly special with animals and at times I would think my dogs loved staying at Hilo Holiday Hotel more than at home..My dogs or dog would hear her coming in my winding driveway and immediately recognized the sound of her SUV and were ready to jump in there kennel before she would open up her back hatch..We have a large palm garden in Kurtistown and my wife and I will plant a palm in her memory..We wish you all the the best in this difficult time. With Aloha Jeff & Suchin Marcus
I first met Susan when she cared for my O'ne. After staying with Auntie Susan, there was no other place to go but the Hilo Holiday Pet Hotel! We would receive phone call updates while we were away. Susan's calls were so fun to hear!
O'ne would be so relaxed when he went in the car with Auntie Susan. That told me alot about her. She was such a special person and will be missed. My condolences and sincere sympathy to her family.
Susan will dearly be missed. She was a friend and a mentor that I will never forget. Her love for her clients and her business is unmatched. Her passion for great service and care of all animals has always inspired me. Mahalo Susan for all that you did.

It is with sorrow and shock that we read about Susan's passing. We want to just say how wonderful she was and although we only knew her in her capacity as Aunty Susan of Hilo Holiday Pet Hotel, she was the best pet sitter; the only one we would trust with our beloved pet, Chumani. Chumani has passed over the rainbow bridge and I wouldn't be surprised if he is playing with Aunty Susan right now. Our deepest sympathy to the family.
Dearest Rich and Family,
Susan was not only a very dear friend, she was like family to us because she cared for our "furry children" as if they were her own. I always looked forward to the mornings when Susan would arrive with the neighborhood dogs all smiling and wagging their tails on their way to "doggie spa". Our Bailey and Buddy always looked forward to seeing Susan who both loved her to pieces. Even when Susan didn't have room at the kennel, she would have Bailey sleep in your bed!
Each time Susan arrived and delivered our furry children, we always shared our lives and transition to the Big Island. Those were very special times spent together because it was out "therapy" session. I know that Susan loved and fulfilled her dream of caring for animals after her long career as a successful attorney and DA. I truly respected her intellect, but most of all, her love for animals - and horse riding! I personally would have never been able to travel back and forth each week to UCSF to finish my PhD. Susan was the only person I trusted to care for Bailey - Susan was Bailey's 2nd mom. Bailey and Buddy even became friends with Penny, Gabby... and Bailey would along the fence at HHPH with her best friend horse. I still vividly remember the day when Bailey and I drove down the long dirt road for Bailey's "interview" almost 15 years ago. Bailey wore her Burberry sweater to make a good impression and she shook "paws" with Susan. Bailey instantly fell in love with Susan. I have many, many pictures of Bailey and Buddy's time at HHPH that I will need to look for.
When I found out about Susan's passing today by Dr. Mike Miyashiro (whose dog, Paco, was also cared for by Susan), I broke down... Although Susan and I never had a chance to see one another regularly or have lunch, we always remained connected by email and cards. In fact, I sent Susan a birthday card recently from Bailey, Buddy, Oliver and Coco. I am certain that Bailey and Buddy were jumping for joy and licking Susan's face when she reunited with them at Rainbow Bridge... along with Penny and all of your many beloved animals.
Rich, Curtis just mentioned that he was just thinking about you the other day... Please let us know if there is anything at all that we can do for you.
We will always remember Susan's warmth, kindness, strength, and generosity. Susan was a very "classy" lady whom we respected and admired for establishing Hilo Holiday Pet Hotel, the best and most special kennel! I will never forget Susan - her memory will always remain engrained and very dear in my heart.
Much love,
Joyce and Curtis Lee
Oliver and Coco
and, Bailey and Buddy, who are now at Rainbow Bridge
We are so sad to hear about Susan's passing. We will always remember, with gratitude, the kind and loving care she provided to our dogs (Hoku and Merlin) over the years.
We send our heartfelt sympathies to her family and friends.
