Sylvester "Onaona" Onaonanamaka Ah Yee's Obituary
SYLVESTER ONAONANAMAKA" ONAONA" AH YEE, 76, of Hilo, left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who loved him, as he passed away on May 14, 2025, with immediate family by his side at Hilo Medical Center.
His loving wife, Martha Ah Yee, survives him, a testament to the enduring power of their love for 44 years.
Born on September 23, 1948, in Kamoa, Kau, he blossomed into a proud graduate of Kau High School in 1967. For an incredible 44 years, he called Keaukaha home, filling the lives of those around him with love, courage, and resilience.
Though he was preceded in death by two sisters, Maggie and Ellen, and 6 brothers, Clarence, Francis, Sonny, Herman, Raphael, and Paul. His legacy lives on through his sister- in- laws: Martell Ah Yee, Ginger Ah Yee and Mutz Ah Yee of California, Roselind (Noah) Strange of Arizona, Vickie Kekuna of Honolulu, Lillian (Larry) Toledo of Hilo, Sharon Char of Maui, and a brother- in- law: Benjamin Kekuna of Waikoloa.
A distinguished Navy veteran, from 1967-1973, Sylvester served on the USS Enterprise as a Marine machinist, nurturing a profound appreciation for the ocean. He went on to become a skilled fisherman, captaining his own boat," Hilinai", a symbol of his unwavering determination. Sylvester also worked in maintenance at Hilo Seaside Hotel for many years and served as a security guard in the Emergency Room at Hilo Hospital, showcasing his versatility and dedication. A true handyman, he possessed a remarkable array of skills, including plumbing, welding, electrical work, construction, small engine repair, and sharpening blades for saws, mowers, and chainsaws.
His numerous nieces and nephews will forever cherish the memories of their beloved uncle. The scattering of his ashes will be announced at a later date.
