Beatrice Hernandez's Obituary

E hoʻomaha me ka maluhia
On September 18th, after a long battle against cancer and other chronic illnesses, our Queen Bea passed, quietly and peacefully. She was not in pain.
We had been saying goodbye to her often over her final days, and her door had been open for her grandchildren to cycle through as they needed. After she passed, we dressed her in one of her favorite outfits with a fresh flower lei around her neck and a blessed rose petal rosary in her hands. The grandkids climbed up on the bed to smell her lei and rosary, hug her, and say a final goodbye.
Beatrice was an adoring wife. She loved Norbert deeply . She always joked that he made the decision to move to Hawai’i without even asking her. He knew it was the right move for them, and she knew he was right. They made a happy life together, going out often to shop, go out for lunch, go for acupuncture, drop-off or pickup the grandkids from school and generally, enjoy island life.
Beatrice was a loving mother. She took her daughters, Michele and Dana, out shopping – real-life Kmart “blue light specials” – and out to movies, always with snacks hidden in her purse. She learned to drive when the kids were little and then there was no stopping her! In Hawai’i, she loved going out for pedicures, to thrifts or to pickup furniture from people around the island. She was always on the go!
Beatrice was a generous “Nana.” In Chicago, she loved showing off her granddaughter and taking her out and about around the neighborhood. In Hawai’i, she loved the bustle of living with her 5 grandkids, going out to soccer practices and games, gymnastics, aerial, and dance. She loved Saturday morning garage sales and bringing goodies back to the family. She was always ready to play UNO, Rummikub and even learned Mah Jong – she loved games!
Always in the middle of everything, we will miss her dearly and feel her absence daily. We are grateful for the time we had with her and the memories we made will always make us smile.
Her final resting place will be at the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery #2 in Hilo, HI, with her husband, Norbert.
A hui hou, Nana!

In lieu of flowers and to honor Norbert/Beatrice, donations may be made to Diabetes Youth Families (https://dyf.org). This organization, and the staff, are dear to their hearts. We host many friends and family from DYF and donate our ohana to them every year.
