Douglas Lee Funk's Obituary
Douglas “Doug” Lee Funk of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on Monday, June 30th, 2025, at the age of 63.
Doug was born in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, to Col. John Clarence Funk and Helen Closkey Funk. He was the sixth of seven children in a proud military family, which eventually settled in San Antonio in the 1970s. Texas became his lifelong home.
Doug attended Cole High School before earning his teaching degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1985. While living in San Marcos, he met Michelle Gerlich, the woman who would become his devoted wife. Michelle was immediately drawn to his boyish charm and boundless energy. They married in 1986 and remained devoted to one another for nearly 40 years. Together they raised two children: Jordan Lee Funk and Allison Marie Funk.
Doug began his professional life as a teacher in the psychiatric hospital setting where he worked for seven years before transitioning into pharmaceutical sales. His natural charisma and strong work ethic led him to a long and successful career selling orthopedic surgical equipment with Smith & Nephew Endoscopy, where he remained for over 25 years.
A man of discipline and enthusiasm, Doug rarely missed a day at the gym, even while traveling. He found joy in beach vacations with family and eventually fulfilled a dream by purchasing a home in Hawaii. It was in Hawaii, a place he deeply loved, that he spent his final days.
Doug will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Michelle Gerlich Funk; his daughter, Allison Marie Funk; and five surviving siblings; Jeff Funk (Julie), Scott Funk, Tim Funk, Cheryl Funk, and John Funk. Doug’s mother-in laws Marjorie Shields and Helen Gerlich as well as brother-in-laws and their wives will miss him; Jerry Gerlich (Kelly), Jim Gerlich (Kim) and Kevin Gerlich. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Doug is now reunited in heaven with his son, Jordan Lee Funk; his brother, Keith Funk; his parents, Col. John Clarence Funk and Helen Closkey Funk; his niece, Christi Funk, and his father-in-law, Gilbert Gerlich. And, surely, he was joyfully welcomed by the many pets he loved over the years, especially his cherished cat, Yogi.
