I knew Uncle George and family growing up in kaneohe as my next door neighbor. His dark skin, tall stature and rugged exterior intimidated the hell out of my adolescent self at first. He was definitely different than all the uncles I've ever met. But as I became more comfortable with the family, I got to see the other characteristics of him that made me feel safe and loved.
When he smiled, I felt it was going to be a good day. Even when I couldn't hear him or understand him, if he smiled, everything was all good.
Its weird that I can't remember any specific interactions between us, other than him washing his red truck (shinier truck I've ever seen). However, I do feel he was important to me during my adolescents. He helped guide me to be a strong (internally and externally), loving and friendly man.
I hope to live up to his legacy and pass it along to the next generation. Men like him are few and far between.
