I only knew Melody from being together at family gatherings of her hanai ohana, particularly at Christmas. When she walked in the door she absolutely radiated happiness and warmth, the embodiment of Aloha. She created this amazing, magical tradition for the Keiki With her storytelling. Though truth be told the adults were equally enchanted and delighted . After feasting together Christmas Eve we would be called together because it was time for Melody to “ do her thing“. Close to 20 keiki would sit up Front on the floor, all eyes on Melody, they listened with rapt attention, as did we all. She would tell a very animated story ,different every year. It would magically weave together Santa Claus, Jesus birth, Hawaiian culture, history and values and our journey as an Ohana on the road of life together. Then she would call each kid up by name and give them all gifts! I believe even for them the story would be the best gift of all and they adored her. Imagine my surprise when I learned in fact she was an Attorney and public defender! What an amazing woman and I love learning more about her through your comments and stories. My heart goes out to Paul and her close family and friends who were so blessed to have her in their lives. Her Christmas Eve storytelling tradition will be forever in our memories and hearts. And when we can again gather at Christmas ,we will set a place for her at the table and feel the love and loss .Ellen Schomer Hilo
